I was asked this question on TikTok and in typical fashion, I wanted to answer in detail. In some ways, diet is definitely more important than exercise, because from a calorie burn perspective, exercise isn\'t ever going to be more time efficient for the energy expenditure than eating is for energy consumption (it takes a lot of exercise to burn a significant number of calories, far beyond what most people achieve with a typical gym programme). Also, exercise can increase hunger which means some people tend to compensate by eating more food, so when you prescribe more exercise to people without any accompanying dietary advice, a subset of those people will gain weight. However, the flip side to this is people can lose body fat by exercising even if they are not reducing their calorie intake, via a process informally known as body recomposition. I.e., if you start performing resistance and aerobic training, you may notice that you lose some fat mass and gain muscle tissue simultaneously, even without accompanying weight loss (this process often depends on how much body fat someone has to begin with, very lean people won\'t achieve this to the same magnitude as someone with a higher body fat percentage). So, in an ideal world we would combine both. But most importantly, even if exercise isn\'t fantastic at promoting a lot of weight loss, it still has a load of health benefits, so it can be a great idea to focus on those and let any body composition be a byproduct of that.
